Call it a new shredquarters.

Golden-based ski retailer Powder7 is working on plans for a new 18,000-square-foot building that will combine a warehouse, showroom and office.

Ten-year-old Powder7 operates out of 880 Brickyard Circle and has plans on file with Golden for a new building a mile away at 1101 Catamount Drive.

Plans for the facility, on 1.5 acres of undeveloped land off Highway 93 near Golden Gate Canyon Road, were unanimously approved at a Golden Planning Commission meeting Sept. 6.

“We are running out of room,” owner Amy Jones said. “We definitely wanted to stay in Golden … it’s nice and close to (Highway) 93, so customers can find us easily.”

According to site plans from the City of Golden, Powder 7 will designate 2,400 square feet for retail space adjacent to a 13,400-square-foot warehouse, which will also contain 2,100 square feet of office space next to the retail shop. In the northern and southeast portions of the site, the retailer will have two parking lots with a total of 27 spots for employees and customers.

Jones said 80 percent of Powder7’s sales come from online buyers, which made it difficult to find the right building – with storage, desirable offices and a retail space.

“Because our business model is fairly unique, it’s hard to get that combination,” she said. “We need all that together under one roof and that’s really hard to find.”

O’Donnell Dannwolf and Partners Architects Inc. designed the expansion.

Rick Muriby, planning manager for Golden, said Powder7 owners Amy and Jordan Jones still need to procure building permits, after which they can begin construction.

According to its website, Jordan Jones started Powder7 selling skis online out of his mother’s basement before moving into the company’s first warehouse in 2007. The business eventually expanded into brick-and-mortar retail, moving in 2009 to its current facility across Highway 93 from North Table Mountain. It has continued to expand operations since then, moving into adjacent facilities in both 2011 and 2015.

Powder7 lists 34 ski brands on its website, including Colorado companies Rocky Mountain Underground, Meier Skis, Liberty Skis and Icelantic Skis. It also sells boots, bindings, gear and apparel, including skins, beacons, shovels and probes for backcountry skiers.

The firm has 18 employees listed on its website.

Powder7 is not the only outdoor company to expand its footprint in Golden recently. In 2016, Icelantic opened its flagship headquarters and retail shop downtown, and bike maker Proudfoot Cycles opened a 2,500-square-foot workshop and showroom, joining Italian outdoor brand Camp USA moving to Golden from Broomfield.

Kitchens Over $200,000 – KBDA 2017 Silver Winner

The Art Collectors

Lachmee Chin and Kurt Dannwolf, ODP Architecture and Design, Hollywood, FL

It’s not often that a designer is asked to do a whole-home remodel and eliminate the kitchen entirely, yet that was the request put to Lachmee Chin and Kurt Dannwolf of ODP Architecture and Design in Hollywood, FL. The art-loving seasonal residents of this Miami condominium were interested in a space that would act as a relaxing retreat, but the need for nothing more than a space for the occasional breakfast warming meant a stand-out kitchen wasn’t on the list.

But the belief that a functional kitchen could work as art motivated the designers to create a small kitchen that would act as a focal point in the open-area design. Special attention was paid to sculptural and architectural elements within the 260-sq.-ft. space, and the team relied on the use of sleek materials and artistic elements to deliver just the right balance.

Setting the backdrop are custom polyester lacquer cabinets in white with hardware from Valli & Valli. The sink area features the Oscar kitchen faucet from Graff, paired with Julien’s Urban Edge sink, set in Opustone grey quartzite. On the backsplash is Opustone Velvet Onyx. To the right sits a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher, Thermador wall oven and microwave drawer and the condo’s existing Sub-Zero refrigerator, which was integrated into the space. Also included are a Fisher & Paykel refrigerator drawer and Sub-Zero ice machine.

The sculptural, angular island acts like a piece of art, separating the living area from the kitchen. Multidimensional, it repeats the polyester lacquer of the cabinets, and was designed to integrate a steel frame to support the 8′ cantilever bar top that boasts 2″-thick textured art glass. In the island, a Viking 30″ Electric Radiant Cooktop provides sleek function. Above, the Moon Crystal Range Hood from Futuro Futuro hovers next to glass and steel pendants that play off of the island’s materials.
